At Sea
“The majority of ‘The Buffalo Dance’ was written at Sea. Most people tend to think you have all this spare time on the ocean and ask “what do you do all the time?.” However in the modern shipping industry, particularly in a senior role you often find that by the time you finish work you just need to sleep before the next shift starts, as the work is 12 hours a day 7 days a week. I work half the year and enjoy travelling and socialising with my time off. There is an old saying that “work on a ship is like being in prison but with the added chance of drowning” in some ways it’s true although although there is always such a big release of freedom you experience just after getting home and that for me is the most inspirational time, something that’s difficult to convey to people, having time to do what you want gives you a sense of freedom that all songwriters crave. Of course, there is a long history of writers that have worked at sea, inspired both at the time and upon reflection. Time out on the ocean really helps you zoom out from the world and consolidate your thoughts.”
